TIM KIRK - THE CHOSEN ONE
There’s a certain spirituality about Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier and like everything this dynamic family winery does, that spirituality is authentic. Every Sunday morning rain, hail or shine—or frost—Tim Kirk and his wife Lara load their five children into the 2002 Toyota Tarago ‘Catholicmobile’ and head up the road to St Augustine’s Church in Murrumbateman for Mass, where Madeleine, Anna, Aodhan, Thomas and Kate and Mum and Dad take up a whole pew. Then outside afterwards the Kirks catch up with all the other parishioners and it’s often an hour or two before they can get away. Tim Kirk—devoted Catholic; loving father; believer in old-fashioned family values; custodian of one of the nation’s most treasured small wineries and lover of rural Australia—wouldn’t have it any other way.

BILL CALABRIA - THE RIVERINA CHAMPION
One-time Riverina boxing champion Bill Calabria was on the ropes in the late 1980s. The Australian wine industry was in the doldrums, sales had dried up, vines were being ripped out and he made the heart-breaking decision to put the family winery in Griffith—founded in 1945 by his parents, Calabrian migrants Francesco and Elizabeth—on the market. Bill owed a lot of money to the bank and vowed to do whatever it took to put bread on the table—so he started washing wine bottles and flagons for other wineries using an old soft-drink bottle washing machine that he salvaged from a paddock in the back-blocks of Narrandera, on the road to Wagga Wagga. “I don’t know how I got the idea of washing bloody bottles,” smiles Bill, the youngest of nine children and managing director and chief winemaker of Westend Estate Wines, “but believe it or not that old machine got me out of trouble and helped me get credibility with the bank.”

    LISA PERROTTI-BROWN
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW is perhaps the most powerful wine critic in Asia. Based in Singapore, the former wine buyer writes for  eRobertParker.com and last year replaced Jay Miller as the Australian and New Zealand wine reviewer for The Wine Advocate, the world’s most influential wine publication. Lisa, 42, is one of the 14 participants in the Landmark Australia Tutorial in the Yarra Valley in September. WBM caught up with Lisa when she visited Tasmania late last month and it was encouraging to hear that she is such a great advocate for Australian wine.

GARY VAYNERCHUK - THUNDER DOWN UNDER
Old-school wine scribes sank their fountain-pens into Australian winemakers last year after supposedly becoming bored with our offering. So when new age wine commentator Gary Vaynerchuk visited Sydney and the Hunter Valley last month and told more than 850,000 Twitter followers that Australian wine has “more than one story”, well, you can’t blame Aussie tweeters for just about blowing the micro-blogging service up with retweets ricocheting around the world and we used every one of those 140 characters to express our gratitude and, in some cases, to even make contact with our new best mate, Gary Vee.

BLEASDALE: 160 YEARS OF WINEMAKING IN LANGHORNE CREEK
On a cool Friday afternoon in June Bleasdale invited the media and trade over for a hearty lunch and a glass of Langhorne Creek’s finest to celebrate 160 years in business. Among those breaking bread were barrel-chested workers in broad-brimmed hats with braces holding their trousers up. Had they dressed ‘up’ for the occasion or do they always look like this? They certainly didn’t look out of place in this old corrugated-iron shed. The men were there to roll up their sleeves and do it one more time for Frank Potts, the founder.

    SEPTEMBER
RORY KENT: SON OF A GUN

Young entrepreneur Rory Kent idolised his father, a wine lover who planted vines on the family farm near the Victorian town of Yarck seven years ago. John Kent was diagnosed with a brain tumour the following year and died 10 months later. His dream in retirement was to visit the vineyards of France. When he died, Rory and his mother Helen climbed to the top of Hermitage Hill overlooking the Rhône and scattered John’s ashes in the vineyard near the famous old chapel. Rory, 30, has vowed to make his Dad proud by doing something positive for the wine community – he calls himself a ‘wine campaigner’ and is on a mission to introduce more young people to wine.

    DREW TUCKWELL: SAUVIGNON BLANC CHAMPION
Being seen with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc in your hand these days is a bit like being caught doing something really bad – like robbing a bank. Well, that’s if you’re a winemaker, a wine writer or a wine show judge. Everyone else loves the stuff. But Drew Tuckwell of Printhie in Orange is one winemaker who reckons Sauvignon Blanc deserves to be taken more seriously and has put up his hand to be a champion of the variety. And Printhie is upping the ante with Sauvignon Blanc, releasing a new $35 reserve wine.
